Reason for Call

For over 150 years, Topeka has transformed from a small claim on the banks of the Kaw River to a metropolis along bustling Interstate 70. In the time between, the Capitol City has been a central location for the westward expansion of the railroad, a battleground for the abolition of slavery, and the beginning for major social change within the American public school system. This rich history still surrounds the city, sometimes visible and sometimes hidden. Present day Topeka has its gems and sustains a certain character, but somehow over time has lost appeal to its regional community. The city is seen in a negative light from those outside its quaint neighborhoods and hopeful communities. Topeka, however, has much to offer as it works toward a better quality of life.

Topeka is a real place of homegrown character with deep community roots and a desire to create positive change.  The arts are key to reviving community awareness and creative activism by providing important thought and fresh perspectives.  Art not only brings people together but it challenges the heart and mind.
