Venues and Activities

• Break Room (911 S. Kansas Ave.): film, music and youth art. Food for sale by the Break Room. Youth/Adult activity: make a city collage with provided materials.

• Blue Planet Café (110 S.E. 8th Ave.): Artwork by regional artists, live music, readings and food provided by the Blue Planet Café.
Youth/Adult activity: Linda Carson will do storytelling at 2, 4 and 5
p.m. You can make wings to flutter around for the rest of the day. Supplies will also be available to make your own button for $1. Merchandise will be headquartered at Blue Planet, with ReThink
Topeka shirts, chapbooks and Frisbees for sale.

• Jayhawk Tower (700 Southwest Jackson St.): Artwork by regional artists, live music, readings and food provided by the Brickyard Barn Inn. The Jayhawk Theatre will be conducting tours of the theater at 1, 3, and 5. Youth/Adult activity: cookie decorating.

• NexLynx (123 SW 6th Ave.): Artwork by regional artists will be on display. Youth/Adult activity: poetry workshop. Chapbooks featuring regional authors will be on sale at this location. Door prize and food provided by NexLynx.

• Supersonic Music (117 S.E. 6th Ave.): Local musicians will perform out front. Youth/Adult activity: chalking

• Topeka Community Cycle Project (TCCP) (423 S. Kansas Ave.): Local craft and art group, the Craftavists have partnered with the TCCP to upcycle bike parts and materials in order to create handmade bicycle inspired art, which will be on display and for sale at this location.

Music, chalk drawing and other activities will line the sidewalks
during the event.

The Pestilence by Israel Wasserstein

A third the world died, as the Revelation said.
A third the world died, black boils sprouting
from groins and armpits, Pestilence transmitted
by a glance, an evil eye. Grain wilted in the fields,
bodies heaped outside doors, were dragged
to mass graves. Judgment was upon the land:
priests would not perform the rites.

Trapped by death in their monasteries
with no company but fleas and rats,
scribes despaired of anyone who would live to read
their accounts. The plague did not spare
the rich or the holy. Winter brought no respite.
Famine reigned.

Who could doubt the end of days? The world
was given over to Death. Devils slouched behind
desperate eyes. Parents fled from their children
and spared no thought for tomorrow. Nothing slowed
the sickness of the eastern wind.

Public mourning was banned, and all mourning
clothes. No one gathered together. Prayers
went unheeded. Villani’s chronicle
ended mid-sentence: there came to an end…

Yet pestilence ceased, and life resumed. Scholars
wrote little of the disease, turned their pins to War.
The Judgment passed: the condemned carried on.

It’s Kansas’ 150th birthday and everyone is invited to come celebrate with “Postcards from Home”!

“Postcards from Home: Images and Poetics from Kansas” is a collaborative art show celebrating the 150th anniversary of Kansas’ statehood. This opening reception will feature food, drink, live entertainment and, of course, Kansas-inspired art. This Re-Think Topeka sponsored event will take place at Warehouse 414…you won’t want to miss it!

Graphic artist, Shanon Fouquet, and Kansas poet, Jeff Fouquet, hope you will consider spending your evening with “Postcards from Home.”

Ready to start creating? Have something great that Topeka hasn’t seen? ReThink Topeka is gearing up for the BIG event- The ReThink Topeka Exhibition and Art Walk. The event is April 9th and the submission deadline is Feb 1st. For details visit the Call for Art page at this site.

Come to North Topeka’s downtown at 11 a.m. Saturday Oct. 23 to participate in this art scavenger hunt. We’ll be starting at the cul de sac at the intersection of Gordon and N. Kansas Avenue.

This family friendly event will feature art on walls, doors, and other structures along Kansas Ave. A more difficult hunt will include art hidden along the alleyways behind Kansas Ave. Each piece of art will contain a number and a word that will help you to complete haikus about the neighborhood. Buttons and NOTO prizes will be awarded on a first come basis.

Participation costs $1.
